I am a general surgeon who began writing openly about my experiences as a surgical trainee after quitting my transplant fellowship in 2023. Through writing about my lived experiences as a female surgeon, woman of color and mother, focusing on topics of mental health, burnout, toxicity in the workplace, I found my voice again after suppressing it for years as a surgical resident. Over the past year I’ve published these pieces on KevinMD, Doximity and The Seattle Times. I’m passionate about writing openly about these topics because I know I am not alone in these experiences. If my words can resonate with and help someone feel less alone, it will always be worth it to me.
I’m taking a break right now from writing about medicine and I’m working on several other writing projects, including: pitching my young adult novel (coming of age story mixed with fantasy elements) to literary agents, writing a collection of poems about motherhood/womanhood addressed to my daughter (a couple featured here), and working on some personal essays exploring identity.
I’ve started writing on Medium and also frequently share blurbs of writing on Instagram (@modawrites) and X & BlueSky (@modawrites). I am also a yoga teacher (completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training last year after quitting fellowship… as one does I guess!) and love sharing my passion for yoga with others! I’ve taught in person and online classes and love working with individuals and small groups.
